Welcome to Give Attendance to Reading, the podcast of Max, Charlie, and Zack Taylor. We are three brothers preparing for Christian ministry who love to read and talk, so we made this podcast. Here we offer summaries of and discussions around some of the best books in Christian literature, one chapter at a time. By listening in each week, not only will you hear a condensed, ”cliffs notes” synopsis of each book, but you will also get commentary on the topics discussed along with our take on how the information should translate to real-life application. Thanks for listening, let’s get into it!

009. Vol. 1, Ch. 9: The Holiness of God
Monday May 27, 2024
Monday May 27, 2024
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
How does God’s holiness fit with the main theme of first John—joy? It all goes back to our fellowship with God, which we cannot know fully without understanding God’s holiness and pursuing holiness in our own lives. This conversation touches on the fact that preaching should start with God and not man’s perceived needs, the importance of education in and submission to the Word of God, the shortcomings of human philosophy and man’s reasoning, the overemphasis and mis-definition of love in our society today, and more. We are glad you have chosen to join in the discussion!
Next week we will be discussing the reading from chapter 10 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 105-114).

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
Christianity can be categorized into two primary approaches: Mysticism or Evangelicalism. This becomes important in today’s chapter because it affects how we seek to have fellowship with God. One of the greatest takeaways from today’s conversation is to base our faith on intellect and reasoning from God’s Word rather than on our feelings. It all rests on the primacy of the Word of God. We also discuss some of the major criticisms of mysticism and try to answer the question of how to strike a balance between liturgical and charismatic worship.
Next week we will be discussing the reading from chapter 9 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 93-103).

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
What does it mean to be a Christian? What would you say is the essence of Christianity? This question is explored in this week’s episode as we seek to explain what fellowship with God is, what it is not, and how it is practiced. Topics such as support for Israel, prayer, and closeness with God are major themes in the conversation. We hope this episode makes you think about what it means to share life with God.
Next week we will be discussing the reading from chapter 8 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 83-92).

006. Vol. 1, Ch. 6: All Because of Christ
Monday May 06, 2024
Monday May 06, 2024
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
“That which we have seen” refers to Christ, and it is He Who is the pinnacle of the chapter we are discussing this week. We will see that Jesus can only be fully appreciated through a proper view of sin. This is one reason we cannot shy away from the honest preaching against sin if we want to cultivate real fellowship with God. We will also discuss the problem of setting up barriers to Christ, Who should be everything we need! We hope you will be encouraged to examine yourself and return to Jesus if there is anything hindering full fellowship with Him!
Next week we will be discussing the reading from chapter 7 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 73-81).

005. Vol. 1, Ch. 5: Christian Experience
Monday Apr 29, 2024
Monday Apr 29, 2024
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
In today’s episode, we have some friendly debate about the experience the Christian is to have and the dangers of false views of sanctification. The discussion is a little longer than typical, but we want to share most of what was recorded so you get the full critique and the overview of assurance at the end (don’t worry, we end on a good note)! Also, if you are confused as to why we start laughing around the 12:40 mark, our dog was trying to squeeze behind Charlie’s chair and kept bumping into him. We couldn’t hold it in! Anyways, although we may agree to disagree at times, it is great to have these discussions and we hope that listening to these conversations makes you think about these important topics. Thank you for listening!
Next week we will be discussing the reading from chapter 6 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 63-71).

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
The solution to the troubles we face is found in Jesus Christ. Mentioned in the opening words of verse one, He is the main theme of these first three verses we are looking at in 1 John. This chapter is a good reminder of the incarnation of Christ and the special revelation of God’s Word to man. May we let it guide our lives and produce the joy, assurance, and fellowship God intends for us.
Next week we will be discussing the reading from chapter 5 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 53-62).

003. Vol. 1, Ch. 3: How to Know the Joy
Monday Apr 15, 2024
Monday Apr 15, 2024
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
Welcome to part 2 of the discussion on the Christian’s joy. In this episode we summarize the outline for the whole book of 1 John as given by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones and offer our own thoughts of this extensive material. We were at first unsure how the conversation would go since it is not easy to talk about an outline, but we walked away encouraged from the time we spent talking about not only this book of the Bible, but also principles that are true of all of Scripture. We think you will be refreshed by today’s recording.
Next week we will be discussing the reading from chapter 4 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 43-52).

002. Vol. 1, Ch. 2: Full and Lasting Joy
Monday Apr 08, 2024
Monday Apr 08, 2024
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
Today we begin a two-part discussion on the joy that every believer has access to. So what does this mean Christians shouldn’t be? What are the implications to fear and living for regulations? What is joy and what is it not? All of these questions will be tackled in our collaboration. Really, it goes back to delighting in Christ and in His Word on a daily basis. We hope this episode is a good mix of education and exhortation.
Next week we will be discussing the reading from chapter 3 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 33-42).
Our Approach
Everything we read and discuss is always filtered through our Christian worldview and 'taylored' (pun intended) specifically for other followers of Christ. So whether you are a lay Christian who enjoys Christian devotional literature or training for ministry yourself, we hope these discussions will be edifying to you. Throughout the show, we plan to cover a mixture of devotional, doctrinal, and Jewish history works.
